One of the most important artists of color in the Pacific Northwest, Smith entered art school at PNCA at the age of 42, and after graduate school returned to become an influential educator. 

In the August 2017 issue of Juxtapoz Magazine, PNCA's newest minor, Art and Ecology, was highlighted along with discussing the importance of arts education curricula.
