PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
​Photography as a medium is fluid, dynamic and constantly re-inventing itself.
To be a photographer today is to place yourself in the center of a world where image making possibilities are endless and where you can decide when to embrace tradition and when to reject it. In Photography, you build a strong foundation in analog and digital techniques and lighting strategies, explore expansive ways of thinking about and making images, and develop a vocabulary to discuss and critique your work and the work of others.
While developing a high degree of professional proficiency, you learn to communicate powerfully and to critically examine the challenges of photographic expression in the contemporary art landscape. All of this provides you with the foundation you need to pursue your career goals, whether in galleries, commercial photography, or graduate studies.
Program life
I wouldn’t be the person or artist I am today without my education at PNCA. My professors and fellow classmates have pushed me in every way possible to become a better artist, experiment, and try new things. Through classes, workshops and support from faculty, I have gained knowledge of how to be a successful artist, achieve my goals and prepare for an artist career.

Photo Faculty Gia Goodrich produces work with the Portland Opera
Our newest Photography Department Faculty member, Gia Goodrich has teamed up with the Portland Opera to produce a series of portraits and interviews featuring transgender members of our community called "As I Am." This work was made to celebrate the Portland Opera premiere of "As One" which tells one story: Hannah's story—and this project was created to help celebrate additional stories and voices from transgender people in our community.
The show opens this Thursday March 7 from 5-8pm

Welcoming Gia Goodrich to the Photo Dept Faculty
Gia Goodrich has joined PNCA's Photography Department as faculty this term, and is teaching Concept Capture Print II.
ABOUT GIA
Gia Goodrich is an award-winning photographer and strategist and is the owner and founder of Portland’s VEV Studios. Her work has been featured in major publications including The New York Times, The Oregonian, Tech Insider, CNN, Huffington Post and Portland Monthly. Gia’s projects and content have garnered local and national attention, including her #LoveWinsPortraits project (for which she received a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council) which celebrated LGBTQ couples throughout the Portland area.
