The 2011 Faculty Biennial celebrates and showcases the rigor, invention and excellence of their creative explorations in a salon-style exhibition that highlights both the diversity and the shared nature of the PNCA faculty.

PORTLAND, OR – October 24, 2011 – “The Father of the Pearl District” and longtime Pacific Northwest College of Art board chair Albert W. “Al” Solheim has been selected to receive The John C. Hampton Award by Business for Culture and the Arts (BCA). To be presented to Solheim at the BCA’s annual Arts Breakfast of Champions on November 3, 2011, the Hampton award recognizes leadership in the arts.

This winter in the Feldman Gallery at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), new Printmaking Department Chair Matthew Letzelter curates a selection of works from archives of the Jordan D. Schnitzer Collection and printed by Maurice Sanchez, the renowned founder and owner of Derriere L’Etoile Studios in New York City. For over thirty years, Sanchez’s collaborations with artists on technically challenging print works have established him as a preeminent professional printmaker and revealed the expressive and expansive range of printmaking techniques. The Behind the Star exhibition includes print works from some of Sanchez’s many successful collaborations, such as those by artists James Rosenquist, Donald Judd, Barbara Kruger, Robert Longo, John Baldessari, Red Grooms and Kara Walker.

Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is proud to announce the first major retrospective of Northwest artist and PNCA alumna Bonnie Bronson ’61 since the Portland Art Museum’s posthumous survey of her work nearly two decades ago. The exhibition, organized in partnership with the Estate of Bonnie Bronson and curated by Randal Davis, Bonnie Bronson: Works 1960–1990 is a comprehensive exploration of her entire body of work, numbering nearly 60 pieces and spanning 30 years of her career.

This is PNCA’s first award from the New York City-based foundation, which was established in 1987 by Andy Warhol in his will to advance the visual arts. “Educating and expanding the contemporary arts audience is an important part of what colleges and universities must do,” says Tom Manley, President of PNCA, “And, at art schools like PNCA, it is absolutely vital that students engage diverse and challenging work firsthand as a key dimension of their creative training. We are, therefore, most grateful to the Warhol Foundation for the support and national recognition this grant provides PNCA in introducing new, leading-edge art makers to the broader public of Portland and the region, and to those young artists whom they will inspire.” The series will be on view in PNCA’s Feldman Gallery and Project Space from February 2012 – May 2013. The exhibitions embody the wandering and fluent nature of artistic practice. The ten thousand people who will visit the exhibitions over the sixteen months they are on view will see clear, compelling examples of the various strategies artists use in the conception and production of creative work. The exhibitions will be enriched by free public artists lectures and by incisive scholarly essays and information about the artists and their work.
