PORTLAND, OR – October 13, 2010 – The Feldman Gallery at Pacific Northwest College of Art is pleased to present Wind, an exhibition of photographic works by Korean artist Jungjin Lee.
Jungjin Lee is known for her textural photographic surfaces, an outcome of her meticulous process. Beginning with handmade Korean mulberry paper, Lee brushes liquid emulsion on to the surface to achieve a painterly effect, unique for each print. The photographs in Wind are selected from the fifty works in the series of the same name. The images capture the ethereal quality of their namesake in a series of landscapes dominated by windswept expanses and foreboding cloud formations; panoramas that dare an adventurous spirit, while at the same time warn against casual entry.
Says Lee, “For me the real beauty in photography is not the end product but the process. My images are a means of metaphorical expression—not a representation of the actual world, or a reconstitution of visual beauty, but a basis for fundamental meditation. The photographs represent thoughts incapable of being expressed in words, asserted, or emphasized as a single argument.”
About Jungjin Lee
Born in Teagu, Korea, in 1961, Jungjin Lee began taking pictures when she was nineteen, then studied for a degree in ceramics at Hong-Ik University in Seoul. From 1988 to 1996, Lee lived in New York, where she earned a Master’s degree in Photography at New York University. She also worked as an assistant to acclaimed photographer Robert Frank. Lee’s work is currently represented by Andrew Bae Gallery, Chicago and among the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; New Orleans Museum of Art; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea; and The Museum of Photography, Seoul.
About Feldman Gallery + Project Space
The Philip Feldman Gallery + Project Space is dedicated to the work of national and international contemporary artists. Mounting six exhibits a year for eight-week runs, visiting artists are invited to lecture or participate in student workshops and studio visits, and each show culminates in a First Thursday opening and a Gallery Talk given by the artist and open to the public. Students participate in all aspects of the show, from details of curation to logistics of installation. Through Philip Feldman Gallery exhibitions and events, PNCA collaborates with other art intuitions such as the Cooley Gallery at Reed College, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art.
