Writing in and as Art

Creative Writing convenes a panel of curators, publishers, artists, and poets to talk about the many ways writing functions in an art practice.
Tim Johnson is a poet and publisher. He lives in Marfa, Texas with his wife, Caitlin Murray, with whom he runs the Marfa Book Co. and Impossible Objects, a press dedicated to inventive art and poetry publishing. He was a founding editor of the online poetics journal, The Volta, and his work has appeared in The Paris Review, Weird Deer, and EIGHTS.
Caitlin Murray, Director of Marfa Programs and Archivist, Judd Foundation; co-editor, Donald Judd Writings; curator, Marfa Book Co. Murray is a poet, writer, and curator. Her Master’s thesis was entitled, “Mapping Poetry onto the Visual Arts: Carl Andre’s Words.” She co-edited a book on the work of Ian Hamilton Finlay and runs Marfa Book Co. with Tim Johnson. She holds an MA in Art History and an MSIS in Archives from the University of Texas, Austin. Her forthcoming artist’s book is entitled Flaubert’s Breath.
McIntyre Parker is an artist, poet, and founder of off-space Pied-à-terre. Through Pied-à-terre, he has presented work by artists and poets such as Michael Dean, Falke Pisano, Hazel White, and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. His work is comprised of film, video, and image as poem. He recently exhibited at odium fati, San Francisco.
Stephanie Snyder is the John and Anne Hauberg Curator and Director of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College. Snyder attended Reed College and completed her graduate work at Columbia University. The author of numerous essays and articles for publications such as Artforum.com, Snyder is also a poet. Many of her exhibitions have focused on the intersection of art and language, particularly in relationship to queerness and image-making in the work of artists such as Wynne Greenwood and Sacha Yanow. She is currently working on a major exhibition with artist and activist Gregg Bordowitz, and an exhibition on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, in collaboration with Reed College English Professor Jay Dickson.
Hope Svenson, curator, Yale Union. Svenson curated the group exhibition Mommy and worked on exhibitions including those with Susan Howe and Lucy Skaer. Svenson holds a B.A. from Hampshire College and a Master of Environmental Design from the Yale University School of Architecture
