Sheila Hamilton To Deliver 2016 Edelman Lecture at Pacific Northwest College of Art
Lecture topic: Destigmatizing Mental Illness

Portland, OR—April 12, 2016—Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) welcomes Sheila Hamilton to deliver the 2016 Edelman Lecture on May 10, 2016 at 5:30pm. Hamilton is a five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and the author of All the Things We Never Knew, her memoir about being blindsided by her husband’s bipolar disorder and suicide. She will speak about her personal experience with mental illness and advocate for a more holistic approach to mental health.

Following her talk, Sheila will be joined in conversation with musician and activist Logan Lynn and Jennifer Pepin, whose J. Pepin Art Gallery works to reframe the perception of mental illness. Benedict Carey, science reporter for The New York Times, will moderate the discussion, which concludes with an audience Q & A.

Sheila Hamilton
Sheila Hamilton is a five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and the author of All the Things We Never Knew. Sheila currently hosts the KINK morning show in Portland, Oregon and serves on the boards of Girls Inc. and The Flawless Foundation. In the years since her husband’s suicide, she has become an outspoken advocate for destigmatizing mental illness and for a more holistic approach to mental health.

Logan Lynn
Logan Lynn is a musician and activist. Since 2007, he has been active in the gay rights movement in Portland. The "Keep Oregon Well" campaign to fight the stigma of mental illness through music and the arts is his brainchild. Lynn releases his eighth studio album, Adieu, later this year.

Jennifer Pepin
Jennifer Pepin is an artist. Her J. Pepin Art Gallery in Portland’s Pearl District features contemporary artists who are reframing the perception of mental illness.

Benedict Carey is a journalist and reporter on medical and science topics for The New York Times.

About the Edelman Lecture
When the late Portland architect and photographer, Alfred Edelman, taught three-dimensional design at PNCA, he challenged his students to consider the principles of engineering, kinetics, physics and other subjects seemingly dissimilar to art. In doing so he brought the outside world into his classroom. Founded by Carol Edelman, the Alfred Edelman Lecture was created to enhance the student’s understanding of the visual world by presenting timeless and/or unique ways to examine and manipulate three-dimensional space and to be a catalyst for lively discussions in the classroom at PNCA.
