Pendleton Woolen Mills’ John P. Bishop Elected President of MoCC Board of Directors
Bishop’s Museum leadership emphasizes the significant history of craft in Oregon

PORTLAND, OR – June 18, 2010 – Museum of Contemporary Craft is pleased to announce the appointment of John P. Bishop as the new President of the Board of Directors. He succeeds previous Board President Kathy Abraham, whose commitment to the Museum spans decades and who led the Museum’s efforts in the development of a partnership with Pacific Northwest College of Art. As the Museum enters the second year of a joint operations agreement with PNCA, the Board welcomes a new leader with the background and appreciation for the history of craft in Oregon.

John is Vice President of Pendleton Woolen Mills, a sixth generation family-owned business, well known for woolen products including its iconic Indian trade blankets. The depth of historical importance of Pendleton within the legacy of Oregon craft history is a valuable perspective that Bishop brings to the Museum Board.

“I was attracted to Museum of Contemporary Craft due to its significant contributions to the community, the fundamental influence of the craft tradition on the textile industry and MoCC’s role as a vital cultural resource for the region,” said John Bishop, “The educational aspect brought by the partnership with PNCA provides additional incentive for me to increase my involvement.”

Some organizations of which John has or currently serves as a governor, director or incorporator include PNCA, National Textile Association, and the American Museum of Textile History. He has contributed time and energy to local fundraising efforts for the Ainsworth Foundation and Oregon Humane Society.
