Portland Galleries Celebrate PNCA
First Thursday Opening | Thursday, October 1
Locations throughout the city
Free and open to the public

PORTLAND, OR – During the month of October, galleries throughout Portland will collaborate to present a large-scale display of work by dozens of Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) faculty, alumni and faculty emeriti. In honor of the College’s centennial academic year, Portland’s urban core will overflow with this significant recognition of PNCA’s long legacy by some of the foremost retail art galleries in the city.

Thursday, October 1 marks the opening of the PNCA artist exhibitions, when galleries are open into the evening. Participating venues include Augen Gallery, Beppu Wiarda Gallery, Butters Gallery, Charles A Hartman Fine Art, Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Froelick Gallery, Laura Russo Gallery, Pulliam Gallery and Mark Woolley/Anka Gallery.

PNCA artists included represent a broad scope of the College’s history from Louis Bunce, faculty member in the 1940s, to alum Miles Cleveland Goodwin ’07. Other notable featured artists include alumnae Sally Cleveland ’81 and Linda Hutchins ’88, as well as former faculty emeriti Manuel Izquierdo ’50 and Lucinda Parker ’66. Several group shows will be involved, including a collection of 13 PNCA artists’ work curated by Mark Woolley for Anka Gallery, while Laura Russo Gallery features 18 individual PNCA artists. View the most up-to-date listing of participating galleries and artists here.

An additional related program takes place the first weekend of October, in conjunction with PNCA’s annual Alumni Weekend October 2 – 4. Friday, October 2 at 6pm in PNCA’s Swigert Commons, alumnus Lee Kelly ’59 delivers the 2009 Homecoming Lecture, in conversation with Bruce Guenther, Chief Curator at the Portland Art Museum. A significant Northwest sculptor, Kelly is a stalwart of mid-century Northwest Modernism, and a recipient of the Governor’s Award for the Arts in 1987. This program is free and open to the public.

PNCA’s Centennial programming reflects the College’s commitment to collaboration and its deep, lasting contributions to the civic and cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Read more about PNCA’s Centennial celebration.

About PNCA
Since its founding in 1909, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) has become a leader in innovative educational programs that connect students to a global perspective in the visual arts. With the recent addition of FIVE: the Ford Institute for Visual Education, the College is enhanced through visiting artists, representing the most accomplished artists, designers, and creative thinkers from around the world. The innovative programs of PNCA+FIVE serve as an incubator for new programming at the College and establish collaborative relationships between students, international artists and the region’s vital art, design and business communities.

The College offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Communication Design, General Fine Arts, Illustration, Intermedia, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. PNCA is the only school of art in the Pacific Northwest to offer graduate education in art and design, now offering two MFA programs.
