Sally C. Lawrence to Receive Honorary Degree at 2010 Commencement

May 16, 2010

Sally C. Lawrence, PNCA President Emerita, will be presented a Doctor of Art Honoris Causa Degree at the 2010 Commencement Ceremony on May 23. The award honors her longstanding commitment to arts education and her close relationship to the College’s development.

Sally C. Lawrence began her long professional association with the College, which spanned 20 years, in 1981. This was the same year that the College’s name was changed from the Museum School to Pacific Northwest College of Art.  In the ensuing years, Lawrence oversaw broad changes at the College when, as a result of a self-study and recommendations from PNCA’s two accrediting bodies, the College took steps in the early 1990s to separate itself from the Portland Art Museum. Lawrence eventually oversaw the 1998 move to PNCA’s present campus in the Pearl District.
