President's Choice Award Winners

April 28, 2010

Congratulations to President’s Choice Award 1st Prize winner Insa Evans and Honorable Mention winner Portia Roy for their work in the BFA Juried Exhibition.

PNCA President Tom Manley announced his picks for President’s Choice Award in the BFA Juried Exhibition this week. Each year two students are selected by the President to receive awards.

GFA Major Insa Evans ‘13 received 1st Prize for her piece _Soon_.

“This piece is about love, distance, and empathy; but most importantly it is about the life of loving a solider,” Insa explained in her artist statement. “No matter where we may be, we are always together at heart.”

In reference to the size of her piece, she writes, “Never have I ever I felt a love so strong and powerful… I wanted the observer to be overwhelmed by the size and the amount of emotion this piece releases; just as I was when I first
fell in love with this solider.”

Portia Roy ‘11 was awarded Honorable Mention for her cast chocolate _Chocolate Teapots_.

Of her work, she writes, “I explore simulation, deconstruct popular culture, and recontextualize the banal. The hybrid nature of my artistic practice requires continual experimentation in process and medium. This type of experimentation has led me to explore diverse media such as fused plastic, sewn foam, or cast chocolate.”

Both works are on view in Swigert Commons until the end of the day April 30.
