PNCA x Design Week Portland

March 28, 2019

Again this year, PNCA is proud to be a sponsor of the citywide celebration of design in its many forms: Design Week Portland. All of our design programs collaborate to present programs and host our annual DWP Open House! Thanks to the BFA in Graphic Design, BFA in Illustration, MFA in Collaborative Design, MA in Design Systems, and MFA in Applied Craft + Design programs!

Open House

Monday April 8, 4-7pm
511 NW Broadway

Monday April 8 from 4-7pm, come hang out with us as we join forces across our undergraduate and graduate studies programs for one big Design Open House!

PNCA design students are taking over the main floor with a showcase of design, and our MFA in Collaborative Design + MA in Design Systems students will be showing off some collaborative and participatory projects on the mezzanine floor. Visualizations of Design Week Portland itineraries will be installed in our historic corridor to help you plan the rest of your week ahead and get inspired to explore.

Come to see design’s next generation, and stay to hear stories of failure and recovery at Portland’s latest edition of the global movement Fuckup Nights at 8pm.

Fuckup Night: Failure By Design

Monday April 8, 8pm
511 NW Broadway

Monday April 8, 8pm, join us for Fuckup Night. Fuckup Night is a global movement where stories of failed ideas and projects are told, questioned and celebrated. The first Fuckup Night happened in Mexico City in September 2012. Since then, people gather in cities all around the world to share stories about going big, and failing hard, and surviving to tell the tale.

So what can you expect? In every Fuckup Night, speakers tell a short story of failure, and how they recovered. What was the project? What went wrong? What did they learn? What would they like to do over...or do they wear their scars proudly? The speakers can be quite varied: artists, designers, technology experts, social entrepreneurs… The one thing that they all have in common? They fucked up. And they’re still here, thriving.

To celebrate Design Week, we'll feature 4 folks working in various areas of the design world. For this round of Fuckup Nights, our fabulous speakers will be friends of our programs, including Jeremy Pelley of OMFGco, Sal Orara, president of the Portland chapter of AIGA, Nina Narelle of FutureWorkDesign and PNCA student Mallary Wilson.

SUPERMarket: MFA Applied Craft + Design Open House + Studio Sale

April 10, 4-7pm
421 NE 10th Ave

The multi-talented students in the MFAAC+D program study modern and traditional craft and design alongside some of Portland’s top artist/designers/thinkers/makers. During the open house, guests will get a chance to look behind the scenes of the MFA AC+D program and tour the student's diverse studio spaces. The projects and products developed in this unique interdisciplinary program will be available to the public during a pop-up sale just feet away from where they are made. From cutting edge design wares, jewelry, ceramics, paintings, illustrations sculptures, and hand-made books. This event represents the spirit of the program’s creative laboratory. All items in the pop-up shop will be $50 or less.

DWP attendees in search of fresh faces, future culturemakers, and emerging talent should organize their agenda around this event. Plus, it’s free to attend and open to the public!cleardot.gif

DWP 2019: From Obstacles to Inspiration

April 11, 6-8pm
511 NW Broadway

We invite you to We Are HERE’s panel discussion centering on the needs and wants of LGBTQ+ Creatives and Creatives of Color -- professional creative inspirations, aspirations, limitations and obstacles. We will explore with our selected moderator and panelists, how these creative leaders navigate uncertainty, marginalization and a ratio to persistent threats as artists and designers living and working in the Northwest.

Understanding the importance of a safe and inclusive space is paramount to creating an environment that fosters healthy difficult conversations about the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and People of Color in the creative community.

Join us for an evening of conversation and collective dialogue. Let’s question why creative careers are out of reach for many in these marginalized groups, and how to remove the lack of awareness and barriers around our creative professions to continue creating actual change within our industry.
