MFA in Visual Studies Program Welcomes Artist Patty Chang

The MFA in Visual Studies program welcomes Artist Patty Chang in a free public lecture, 6:30 pm Thursday, February 18 in The Lab at Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 NW Davis St.
Patty Chang is both a performer and image-maker living and working in Los Angeles and Brooklyn. Her performances, or time-based sculptures, are examinations of the female experience that are often visceral and humiliatingly vulnerable. Characterized by physical and often enduring challenges, her performances are a brash confrontation of the metaphoric and erotic.
“Chang” is well known for her earlier performative works, which deal with themes of gender, sexuality, language and empathy. Her recent work, “Shangri-La” (2005), which was shot in Shangri-La, China, investigates how cultural knowledge becomes produced, adapted and re-appropriated for consumption. In 2008, Chang was a nominee for the Hugo Boss Prize (Guggenheim Museum, NY). In fall 2008, Chang was the “Guna S. Mundheim Visual Arts Fellow” at the American Academy in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited in international institutions and museums, such as The New Museum for Contemporary Art, The UCLA Armand Hammer Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Chang’s lecture is part of the Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series, which brings national and international artists to the College. Lectures are an integral part of PNCA’s two graduate programs, the MFA in Visual Studies and the MFA in Applied Craft and Design, offered jointly with Oregon College of Art and Craft.
