Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies’ 2020 Symposium Showcases Portland’s Creativity and Resilience

The Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies at PNCA will host a two-day online symposium on November 20-21, 2020, that explores the intersections of art, design, technology, critical race theory, disability studies, and activism through collaboration and creative practice.
Forms of Care: Building the Worlds We Need features participants from Portland and beyond, whose panels, lectures, and workshops respond to issues of accessibility, support, mutual aid, independence, and networks of care that lie outside of the state and nonprofit industrial complex. The symposium’s keynote speakers are Don’t Shoot PDX Executive Director Teressa Raiford and Vanderbilt University Associate Professor Aimi Hamraie.
The focus of the symposium aligns with the values of a PNCA education, which advocates for artists, designers, and critical thinkers to contribute to society through cultural production and activism.
“Although Portland has been a fixture of the national news media for months, what is lost is the incredible community support and mutual aid happening at the local level,” says Dr. Shawna Lipton, symposium organizer and Chair of the MA in Critical Studies. “We seek to highlight the role artists and designers play in creating a more livable world in the present and future.”
