MFA Print Media Welcomes Fall Artist-in-Residence Pat Boas

Through our unique Watershed publishing program, artist Pat Boas will be collaborating with Print Media students throughout the Fall semester to create a complete edition of prints. We asked Pat to elucidate her thoughts and process around this project:
"A view of language as an illusive, mysterious ally in our effort to make sense of the world has been a central motivator for me. With sources such as children’s homework exercises, newspaper layouts, web icons, crowd-sourced image banks, Shaker spirit drawings and high-end art journals, I’ve approached the “daily record” as a series of palimpsests, scrubbing down through the layers, isolating, pairing, omitting or obliterating.
The work I will be doing at Watershed comes from my habit of collecting super-saturated flat color gallery ads in magazines like Frieze and Artforum. Not surprised that the majority of these ads, which cost thousands and thousands of dollars, announce solo exhibitions by male artists, I took pleasure in cutting out all the text and amassed a collection of brightly colored glyph-like forms. Randomly stacked, they often resemble strange characters. I've produced selected combinations as large digital prints and now am honored and excited to work with Matthew and his excellent students to see what happens when we play with this source material for relief and mixed-process monoprints" ~Pat Boas
Pat Boas is a visual artist. Her work has been shown at the Portland Art Museum, Elizabeth Leach Gallery, PDX Contemporary, the Art Gym and Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR); the Hallie Ford Museum (Salem, OR); the Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Fe, NM); the Boise Art Museum; the Salt Lake Art Center; the Nicolaysen Museum (Casper, WY); the Center on Contemporary Art and Consolidated Works (Seattle, WA) and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She is a 2017 Hallie Ford Visual Arts Fellow and the recipient of a 2018 Oregon Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship. Additional honors, fellowships, grants and residencies have come from the Bonnie Bronson Fund, Caldera Arts Foundation, the Corporation of Yaddo, the Ford Family Foundation, Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, Jentel Foundation, Oregon Arts Commission, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Portland Art Museum, and Portland’s Regional Arts and Culture Council. Reviews of Boas’ work have appeared in Art in America and Art Papers. She is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery (Portland, OR) and is a professor in the School of Art + Design at Portland State University.
