The Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies is pleased to announce our Summer Lecture series will run as scheduled either in person or online!
Join us for conversations on art and ideas. Visiting Faculty give a public talk Wednesdays, at 6pm from June 17 to July 29, 2020 as part of the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies Summer Lecture Series. These events are free and open to the public.
We will be hosting: Kyung Me, Biquini Wax EPS, Miguel A. López, Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour, Maricel Alvarez, Ruth Noack, and Prem Krishnamurthy.
June 17 Kyung Me - Kyung Me (b. 1991; lives and works in Brooklyn, New York) received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2018. Her work explores potential architectures of the subconscious and how images, objects and memory are intertwined to conjure complex and spiritual spaces.
June 24 Ruth Noack - Ruth Noack is based in Berlin and Washington DC. Noack is an author, art critic, university lecturer and exhibition maker since the 1990s, trained as a visual artist and art historian.
Ruth Noack was curator of documenta 12 (2007) and is currently developing a new cultural center for Whitman-Walker Health in Washington DC.
July 1 Biquini Wax EPS - Biquini Wax EPS is an artist/curatorial/writing collective based in Mexico City and run by artists Paloma Contreras Lomas, Ramón Izaguirre, Israel Urmeer, Cristóbal Gracia, Daniel Aguilar Ruvalcaba, and Eric Valencia, writers Gustavo Cruz, and Sandra Sánchez, art historian Natalia de la Rosa, and curators Roselin Rodriguez Espinosa Julio GarcÃa Murillo, and Nika Chilewich, also directors of the Yacuziz, a collective of Sub-Critical Studies.
July 8 Prem Krishnamurthy- Prem Krishnamurthy is a designer and curator based in between Berlin and New York. As a founding principal of award-winning design studio Project Projects, he has collaborated with clients including the Art Institute of Chicago, Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, Guggenheim Museum, Harvard University, Istanbul Design Biennial, The Jewish Museum, M+ Museum (Hong Kong), MoMA, RISD Museum, SALT Istanbul, Vera List Center for Art & Politics, Whitney Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and others. Project Projects is a two-time finalist for the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s National Design Awards, the USA’s highest award for design. Prem is also the director/curator of P!, a multidisciplinary exhibition space and gallery in New York City’s Chinatown.
July 15 Maricel Alvarez - Maricel Alvarez is a stage and film actress, director, choreographer and curator based in Buenos Aires. Her work has been performed on stages, galleries and museums in Argentina and abroad. In 2010 she co-starred with Javier Bardem in the award winning film Biutiful.
July 22 Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour - Jackie Im is a curator and writer based in Oakland, CA. She has contributed to exhibitions at the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art, the Walter and McBean Galleries at SFAI, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Queens Nails, the Mills College Art Museum, and MacArthur B Arthur. She holds a BA in Art History from Mills College and an MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts. She is currently Co-director of Et al., a gallery in San Francisco’s Chinatown, with Facundo Argañaraz and Aaron Harbour, and co-runs the website journal.fyi.
Aaron Harbour is an Oakland-based curator, writer, and artist. He co-runs the website and co-runs the website journal.fyi. He is Co-director of Et al., a gallery program in San Francisco, and has additionally curated exhibitions at the Popular Workshop, Important Projects, NADA Miami and New York, MacArthur B Arthur, Liminal Space, and Royal Nonesuch Gallery, among others. He runs Curiously Direct, an art criticism blog on Facebook, and has additionally written for Art Practical, Decoy Magazine, Art Cards, and several small publications and artist catalogues.
July 29 Miguel A López - Miguel A López is a writer, researcher and Co-Director and Chief Curator of TEOR/éTica, based in Costa Rica. His work investigates collaborative dynamics and feminist re-articulations of art and culture in recent decades. He is a co-founder of Bisagra, an independent space active in Lima since 2014. In 2016 he was awarded the Independent Vision Curatorial Award, given every two years by Independent Curator International.
