The MFA in Applied Craft + Design program is excited to welcome Sruli Recht to present a public lecture on his work and research as part of the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies Lecture Series.
An amalgam of his many influences and aptitudes, award-winning Icelandic designer Sruli Recht is an exemplar of the hybrid ethos. Equal parts innovator and provocateur, Recht has made a career of blurring the lines between fine art, runway fashion, and industrial design.
From his beginnings in the fashion arena working with the likes of Alexander McQueen to his own “Non-Product” series exploring the relationship between production materials and waste, Recht’s two decades of professional output have honed his contrarian approach to design, culminating in his latest endeavor as chief designer for Norlan, a brand focused on modernizing the whisky drinking experience through design, science, and ritual.
With origins in Israel, Recht’s personal and professional journey has taken him from Melbourne, to London to Reykjavík, and now Amsterdam; where the designer can be found in his atelier, challenging established assumptions and long-entrenched practices.
While a champion of employing the latest bleeding-edge production methods and utilizing naturally-occurring, indigenous materials, for Recht, the only constant ingredient is narrative — a seamless integration of story and product that runs throughout his body of work.
