Friday Fives: Loveis Wise

November 29, 2019

Every Friday we give #highfives to a different designer from our extended family of PNCA students, faculty, alumni, and guest lecturers. 🙌🏾🙌🏻🙌🏽 We ask them five questions. They send us five images.

Loveis Wise (she/her/they/them) is an Illustrator, Designer, and Capricorn based in LA from Washington, DC. Her work often speaks from themes of joy, self-love, Black culture, and mental health. Within her 3 year span of freelancing, she has worked with clients such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Instagram, Doc Martens, REI, and Google, to name a few. Here in Portland she has worked with Bitch Media and Weiden + Kennedy, and was a keynote speaker at WeMake’s DISRUPT conference in 2018, shining a light on what being young, black, and hungry for the work means.

Loveis is with us for a special PNCA Illustration-sponsored night of our Design Lecture Series on December 4, 2019.

Q: What or who inspires you?

A: People who can practice mindfulness and presence in every moment! Also, witnessing and participating in joy inspires me creatively.

Q: What do you geek out about?

A: MUSIC and experiencing great art and design.

Q: What do you do to get “unstuck?”

A: Stepping out of my patterns and comfort zone helps me to get unstuck. I love pulling from nostalgia and memory in my work, so it's always helpful to channel my inner child and take field trips to recenter my mind.

Q: What music (or podcasts) are you listening to, or what are you reading right now?

A: Currently...

Music: Noname's Telefone album and lots of Stevie Wonder, Amel Larrieux, Jon Bap, Nina Simone, Haitus Kaiyote, and Erykah Badu.

Podcasts: Creative Pep Talk, The Friend Zone, and Tarot for the Wild Soul.

Reading: Toni Morrison's God Help the Child.

Q: Is there anything you wish you had known just starting out, that you know now?

A: It's important to have boundaries in all parts of your life and to protect them fiercely. Feel free to say no when you need to, and trust your intuition always!
