Lifetimes of creative practice
Over one hundred years of alumni have shaped the visual arts landscape of the region as well as making significant contributions in the fine and applied arts.

Lucinda Parker is represented by Russo Lee Gallery. She received her MFA from Pratt Institute, New York. The Portland Art Museum honored her with a mid-career retrospective in 1995, and the Boise Art Museum presented a one-person exhibition of her work in 2002. Major public collections include the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University, the Portland Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. Public commissions can be found at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland City Hall, and a new federal courthouse in Bakersfield, California, among others.

Jane Schiffhauer
Artist and MFA in Visual Studies alum Jane Schiffhauer created the Rainmaker Residency to support recent graduates of MFA programs in Portland with subsidized studio space as well as professional development education. It is the first artist residency of its kind established within the city limits of Portland, Oregon. Five to eight residents are accepted each July for a 12-month residency.

​Jean Pierre Veillet
Jean Pierre Veillet is a Portland-based artist, designer, and builder. Trained as a sculptor, Veillet takes a spatially informed, socially conscious, and aesthetically thoughtful approach to projects from tiny retail renovations to ground-up eco-developments with his design build firm, Siteworks.
Michael Curry ’81
Michael Curry works widely as a visual and concept designer for numerous companies, such as Cirque du Soleil, The Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal National Theatre, Disney Theatrical Productions, and the International Olympic Committee. He collaborates regularly with directors like Robert LePage, Nicholas Hytner, Julie Taymor and William Friedkin. Mr. Curry has received many prestigious awards, including several for his work on Broadway, Olympic ceremonies, and his continued innovations in the fields of scenic visual effects and puppetry design. In the music industry Michael is known for his innovative designs for Michael Jackson, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and countless others. Michael Curry Design, Inc. is comprised of 50 innovative designers and fabricators who conceive and produce state of the art creations for live entertainment. The studio is located in Portland, Oregon.
Manuel Izquierdo '51
Manuel Izquierdo was born in Spain in the 1920s and his childhood was quickly eroded by the tumult of the Spanish Civil War.After fleeing Spain and living in refugee camps in France, he managed to immigrate to Portland and eventually attend the Museum Art School, now PNCA. Studying printmaking and sculpture, Izquierdo explored media such as wood and ceramics, suggestive of the legacy of his bricklayer father and carpenter grandfather. Izquierdo is the subject of a monograph titled Manuel Izquierdo: Myth, Nature, and Renewal, which is available at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition.

Arvie Smith ’86
In 2011, alumnus and faculty emeritus Arvie Smith '16 completed Project Hope, a public arts project through the Regional Arts and Culture Council working with incarcerated youth of the Juvenile Detention Justice Center of Multnomah County to create five 8′x15′ murals. Four of the works are installed in the Multnomah County Courthouse and the fifth is on display at Donald E. Long detention facility.

Linda Hutchins '88
Linda Hutchins is a visual artist whose work reappraises the meaning and experience of drawing. Audible rhythms of her repetitive mark-making have led to cross-disciplinary collaborations and performances involving language, sound, and movement. Recently she has been developing custom fingertip tools to facilitate mark-making with both hands and all ten digits. Her work is informed by the lifelong study of textile structures, an engineering mindset, and memories of sailing out of sight of land.
Hutchins' work has been exhibited at the Portland and Tacoma Art Museums, and she has performed at Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and Performance Works NorthWest. Hutchins has been honored with two Individual Artist Fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Jurors' Award in the Tacoma Art Museum's 2009 Northwest Biennial, and a solo exhibition in the Governor's Office. Hutchins' work is in numerous private and public collections including the Portland Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, the King County (WA) and Multnomah County (OR) Public Art Collections, the Multnomah County Library John Wilson Special Collections, the Center for Contemporary Art and Culture (formerly Museum of Contemporary Craft) at Pacific Northwest College of Art, and The Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry.
Hutchins holds a BFA in Drawing from Pacific Northwest College of Art and a BSE in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan. Before attending art school, she wrote operating system software for Intel Corporation.

In the Philippines, photographer, sculptor, and environmental/political advocate Mary Mattingly ’02 worked with local artists and young people to create community-based art projects including plans for wearable portable architecture.

Julia Fish ’76 was included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial and her work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Fish’s work is in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. Fish lives in Chicago, where she is Professor of Studio Arts in the School of Art and Design, College of Architecture and the Arts, University of Illinois at Chicago. She is represented by Rhona Hoffman Gallery.
