My work explores the ideas of emergence and complexity through abstract painting. I pose the question “How do things come to be?” by observing how qualities emerge and compositions grow by collaborating with a systematic painting process that balances intention and unpredictability. A system is used to disrupt the trajectory that the paintings may take and assist in the growth of an ever expanding lexicon of marks, color, shape, and thought. I build my images one layer at a time, with each layer focusing on a single color, method of mark making, or shape. The image emerges only when these layers coalesce into an image that becomes more than the sum of its parts, and when my mind and my materials come to rest at the same moment.
