DEEPENING SURFACES: A PROPOSAL FOR THE INTIMATE AND CONNECTIVE POTENTIAL
Stephanie Sun
MFA Applied Craft + Design
My work challenges our assumptions of surface design, deepening opportunities for vulnerable connections with ourselves and each other. Through textiles, symbols, and patterns, I subvert the superficial nature of surfaces, by embedding intimate communication in its function. As our lives are increasingly mediated through digital platforms, I work to disrupt the two-dimensionality prescribed by such spaces. We must seek value below the surface and challenge our first perceptions in favor of curiosity and generous intimacy. I share personal narratives through the visual language of my work, inviting viewers to see “behind the curtain” and come face to face with the potential for meaningful connection through intentionality and a willingness to be vulnerable.
