Project Statement
In these moments
When I feel overwhelmed
I lay down
And embrace the tiny spot I hold
In an infinitely loving multi cosmos.
As moment becomes memory
I grasp a sliver of time
I cut and I stitch it.
Mending
And chose to remember these moments of nothingness
As a part
Of everything I am.
Artist Statement
The vivid blue color of this cyanotype collage is formed by durational exposure to the sun. The ethereal white voids are formed by imprints of my body, my friends, botanicals and ephemera from my daily life in the space that once held us.
In this work I build layers, superimposing over work, and additively quilting the work to create tonal variation and tactile rhythmic texture. I use the space of words within prose to remove exposing layers below.
I incorporate void spaces and fragmented lyric prose cut into the work to further explore the theme of fragmented memory and ghosts. These gaps and absences suggest the ways in which our memories are incomplete and subjective, and the phrases serve as clues or prompts for the viewer to fill in the gaps with their own experiences and associations creating their own narrative to a shared experience.
About Stacia Aguilar
I am a tired Chicana who defies classification.
My work is performance of labor, and rest from the labor caused by performative labor.
I am interested in the object as a form of non colonial time keeping, and thriving in space as a political gesture.
