VARIANCE CREATIVE BRIEF
OVERVIEW
Change is a constant force in the world and in our lives. Sometimes it can feel like it's the only thing we can depend on. I have always been fascinated by how inevitable change is but also how difficult it is. Sometimes it's something we choose to change and sometimes life makes that choice for us. When it comes to the mental struggle altering a mental state or coping with the feelings of loss change often embodies I know many people can relate to the struggle. One day we are promising ourselves we will do something (or not do something) and the next day we are back to our old habits. One day our life is how it's always been and then one moment happens and we are never the same. At very intense times of change in my life I have turned to the live music experience as a way to get me through. I will be working with a musician to create the music for the album. This will culminate in a live performance that is open to the public and will be recorded and replayed at my thesis defense. My thesis is a combination of music and change. It is inspired by the concept of an accepted a status quo, the influences that cause that to change, and the hope of resolution through a newly developed state of being. Using these elements as thematic inspiration, I will design a branding identity for a musician's concept album and the visuals for an upcoming live performance.
AUDIENCE
My hope is that anyone that has gone through or is currently experiencing a difficult change can feel seen in their struggle and strengthened in their hope for resolution. I want the audience to not only resonate with the feelings of discomfort but also be reminded hope.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
The visuals for this identity will be broken down into three parts: the status quo, change, and resolution. Each phase will be represented by an icon. For the status quo I will be using photography and nature to illustrate the norm. The next phase, change, will be represented by visual distortion of the nature photography. The third and final phase will be resolution, represented by a vivid space that combines the concept of nature with exaggerated colors and arrangements. I chose to use the combination
of photography, video, and projection to bring reality and the perception of that reality to the project experience. The way we perceive what is considered real is primarily based on how our eyes and brain interpret light refracting off of surfaces. Photography and videos represents real moments in time and projection represents altered reality. By using these mediums I want to push and pull between those concepts to create a performance that is immersive on sensory level and is also using the medium itself as a secondary comment on how we see change.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
Projection mapping has become a widely used medium for visual entertainment. There are large scale uses like Disney World using hundreds of high powered projectors to animate the castle. And small scale uses like protesters projection on the front of Trump Tower. Musicians often use videography and animation to bring an extra visual element to the concert experience. The role of a graphic designer is growing and having technical skills in programs outside of standard suit is becoming essential in order to stand out in a saturated market. Video editing, animation, and projection mapping can be applied to almost every job a designer would apply for. It can be used to enhance digital marketing techniques, offer a wider skill set in a collaborative studio environment, and open up a different set of opportunities for advancement.
