Abstract
This is a series of work that reflects the intense feelings of uncertainty, grief, and
nostalgia stemming from my experiences with culture shock, since moving to Oregon from Hawai’i. Using paint, screenprint and monotype, I made a collection of works that offers an insight into the bits and pieces of my inner environment all through the lens of a cute blue and white dog, who I like to call Doggy.
Doggy exists as a mechanism for self reflection. Being an unrealistic and playful rendition of a dog, I utilize the cuteness of its child-like imagery to process my emotions, memories, and experiences with the comfort cuteness can bring. While placing Doggy in scenes of discomfort, I am exploring the past while confronting my present.
Artist Statement
This current body of work is an exploration of the mediums of acrylic paint and screen print focusing on a character named Doggy, a blue and white anthropomorphic dog. Doggy’s existence stems from the culture shock I have and continue to experience, since moving to Oregon from Hawai’i. The intense feelings of uncertainty, grief, and nostalgia stemming from culture shock grew as I’ve become more aware of the world around me and how I am perceived by others.
Doggy exists as a mechanism for self reflection. Being an unrealistic and playful rendition of a dog, I utilize its cuteness of childlike imagery to process my emotions, memories, and experiences with the comfort cuteness can bring. While also placing Doggy in scenes of discomfort, I am exploring the past while confronting my present.
