Abstract
My thesis project, Conversations with Space, is an animated installation exploring space as an experience and an archive of its inhabitants. The installation consists of a 1:12 scale model of a bathroom that appears as a hole in a wall – a bathroom that is brought to life with looping animations that are projected into the space using refraction. These animations are the internal made external, reflections of personal emotions and memories made in this space and spaces like it. The installation's rich details encourage audience interrogation for its narrative and inspire the audience to bring further life to the piece with their own introspection.
Artist Statement
I’ve long thought about environment and identity in my work, reflecting on the small details of the corners of my room, the feelings of doorways and long halls, the ghosts of neighborhood houses that are no longer the scenery of my morning routine through prints, illustrations, and animated shorts. But this project prompted me to question why I’ve been thinking, feeling, and connecting to architectural environments for so long. What is it about these spaces, the experience of them? My interdisciplinary practice is an introspective tool used to better understand and connect to myself and the world around me. In exploring this connection, my recent work has been centered around hands-on methods and materials in order to externalize the internal, and inspire the interrogation of relationships with space.
