Abstract
The main drive of my creative process for fabricating miniatures is to consider how a creature would reside in their own private space, and how would this space reflect their personality, aspirations, and way of life. Making a Miniature Home is a set I am fabricating that is inspired by stop motion animation. The character that exists in this home is a fantastical forest creature named Allister. He is a hermit who lives a self-sustaining lifestyle, and the aesthetics of his home reflects that. His lifestyle consists of growing his own crops, foraging, and maintaining his vast collection of books. Allister also barters with guests that come to view his library and trade goods that he cannot produce on his own.
Artist Statement
I am a miniaturist. My craft involves fabricating 1.5” sculptures made with wood, foam, clay, and found materials. I frequently collect objects from nature, or items from second-hand stores to use in my work. I believe it is important to be conscious of what kind of materials I use, and how much waste is created in order to make miniatures. Therefore, I use as many recycled materials as possible. Being conscious of the materials I use is important to me because I’m aware that many materials used for artistic practice are often harmful to the environment. So, I try to use recycled objects, and materials whenever I can.
The themes of my miniatures consist of fantasy, nature, magic, antique oddities, and entomology. I am influenced by antique furniture, apothecaries, cabinet of curiosities, fairytales, and mythological creatures. I enjoy exploring concepts that are not from my own reality, because fantasy and mythology provides feelings of wonder and curiosity. My process is to imagine another worldly being and ask myself where this creature would reside. What does its home look like? How does it exist and interact in its own world?
