Artist Statement
Guardians of Celestia is a short film about a group of five girls who have the responsibility of guarding their world from any danger. They encounter a monster who is attacking their city and they must stop him before he destroys everything. I have always been a fan of the look of old animated tv shows and movies. All the frames used to be hand drawn on paper and then inked or xeroxed onto transparent sheets of plastic called cels. These cels were then hand painted and photographed one by one. Finally all these individual pictures were put together and developed onto film. This whole process resulted in the animation having a really textural and handmade look to it. It doesn't look super clean and polished like some digital animation. Whenever I make digital art I always enjoy experimenting with this kind of aesthetic which is why I’ll often use digital watercolor brushes or add some film grain to my final illustration. I wanted to experiment with that same aesthetic for my thesis and my goal was for the final product to look similar to the old animated media I grew up watching.
