“Within these endless hours of labor exists an exalted simulacra of blackness, body, and brutality solicited by the seismic torture of being, but not belonging.” -Anta Diallo, on the work of Amirah Chatman
This work culminates the pursuit to visualize where my loved ones have gone, and where we will go. Born out of a need for beauty in a world that often feels bleak, “This Place” seeks to honor those no longer with us and those who are still here. This is a Place that time can’t touch; a Place where we’re free to be, just as we are. Through the use of saturated chroma and dynamic marks, I draw upon weather phenomena and space-influenced imagery as a metaphor to interpret my experiences. Themes of impermanence, diaspora, turbulence, and a skewed perception of self motivate every piece. A combination of soft sculpture and chalk drawings embody physical elements of This Place, bridging the gap between reality and intangible.
