program description

Embracing the hybrid moving image by combining digital technology, fine art practices, and critical theory.

Boundary Crossings

PNCA’s biennial Boundary Crossings is a two-week intensive institute open to working professionals, scholar/practitioners, and graduate and upper-level undergraduate students interested in a hands-on exploration of animation as a medium and a site for investigation of moving image interdisciplinary practice. The Institute’s guest faculty is comprised of internationally renowned teachers, scholars, and practitioners. Participants of past Institutes have come to Portland from around the world to engage and push their practice beyond the frame. Boundary Crossings culminates with a public showcase of work created over the two weeks.

Institute Director

Rose Bond, Director

Rose Bond produces work at the juncture of experimental animation, expanded cinema and experiential design. Her large-scale animated installations navigate the allegories of place and illuminate urban space. Recent work includes multi-screen live projections for avant-garde composers Olivier Messiaen‘s Turangalîla-Symphonie and Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia. With roots in frame-by-frame, hand drawn animation, which is defined by temporality and image, she now focuses on the spatial dimension and breaking out of the traditional frame. Rose Bond is a Canadian born media artist who lives and works in Portland, Oregon. She is Professor and Department Head for Animated Arts and Institute Director for Boundary Crossings at the Pacific Northwest College of Art at Willamette University.
