MFA and MA Programs at PNCA

The Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies at PNCA, part of Willamette University, offers several graduate and post-baccalaureate programs.
  • Creative Writing – Low-Residency

    Embark on your writing journey in a city with a burgeoning literary scene. Study prose, poetry, translation or a combination of genres under professional mentors.

  • Critical Studies

    Merge theory and practical application—and influence social change. This MA program prepares you for careers education, advocacy, public policy and curation. You may also combine this MA with an MFA program.

  • Dual Degree MFA/MA

    Experience a balanced education that emphasizes both creative practice and critical analysis. Students in the dual degree program earn both an MA in Critical Studies and an MFA in either Visual Studies or Print Media in three years.

  • Print Media

    Prepare for traditional and emerging printmaking career pathways as you sharpen skills in bookmaking, screenprint, lithography, relief, and related areas.

  • Visual Studies

    Enhance, refine and diversify your creative skills through independent research and analysis. Focus on one medium or incorporate many.

  • Visual Studies – Low-Residency

    Earn your MFA in a more convenient-for-you way in the low-residency version of our visual studies program; it’s ideal for experimental makers who need more flexibility.

Post-Bacc Residency
This mentor-led residency is designed for you to keep your creative momentum going after you earn your BFA. During two rigorous semesters, you’ll take upper-level electives, expand your portfolio and present your work. The post-bacc residency is also excellent preparation for MFA programs.

Program Formats: Full-Time vs. Low-Residency

In addition to our full-time, campus-based programs, we offer two low-residency MFA programs. Both will give you a chance to spend time at our beautiful downtown Portland campus. Here's are a few benefits of each format:

  • Full-time: Get dedicated studio space in the Glass Building, plus access to campus-wide resources and exhibitions at both PNCA and Willamette University in Salem.
  • Low-res: Commit to your practice without relocating to Portland or leaving your full-time job. Instead, attend two intensive residencies on campus and work independently with a mentor in between.

You can only apply to one PNCA graduate program at a time, with the exception of our dual MFA/MBA degree. Here’s a closer look at the process:
