Our Fashion Minor

Dive into material exploration, garment construction, fabric manipulation, silkscreen printing, pattern drafting, draping, textiles, concept development, and fashion sketching. Develop technical, design, and communication skills to create a strong and holistic portfolio.

Why should you minor in fashion at PNCA?

  • Community events and opportunities. Embrace creativity through our annual Cardboard Couture Fashion Show or showcase your work at First Thursday. You can even showcase your creations through our student-run galleries and project spaces.
  • Experiment with on-campus resources. As an art school in Oregon, we're offer a variety of labs and facilities on campus. Utilize our Photography Lab, printmaking center, and Wacom Lab to bring your ideas to life.
  • Develop connections for post-graduation life. The Office of Career Design will help you combine your interest in fashion with your major. Navigate through career options, residencies, and graduate programs through the variety of connections on campus.

Fashion Faculty

With their vast experience, our faculty members understand the fashion industry and design process. PNCA also offers visiting artist talks, workshops, and gallery walks to learn more from other artists, designers, and fashion contributors.

  • Meet Sara Huston

    Sara Huston holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. As an artist, designer, educator, and curator, she co-founded the avant-garde studio Last Attempt at Greatness.

  • Meet Liza Rietz

    Liza Rietz brings over 15 years of experience in designing custom garments. Her work, inspired by Japanese design and 1920s fashion, emphasizes the sculptural interplay between body and garment.

  • Meet Crystal Schenk

    Crystal A. Schenk specializes in sculpture and sculptural installations. With an MFA from Portland State University and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her labor-intensive, detail-oriented work spans a variety of materials.

Curriculum

Consider fashion as an aspect of contemporary society. Explore the garment itself from many perspectives including costuming, wearable technology, textile design, soft sculpture, performance, and body augmentation. Gain skills to make a statement within our fashion design program.

  • PR372 Printing on Fabric

    Master screen printing, relief printing, intaglio, and pochoir on textiles, alongside innovative fabric dyeing techniques. Transform your creations into stunning pieces for apparel, interior design, or art installations.

  • SC291/391 Sewing Construction I or II

    Learn patternmaking techniques, textiles, and sewing skills with various seams and finishes. Through practical hands-on experience, field trips, and discussions, this course lays the foundation for innovative soft design.

Requirements & Admission

To meet the Fashion minor requirements, you need to take a variety of 3-credit courses that add up to 15 credits. You can work with your Academic Advisor to make a personalized plan that shows how this minor fits into your studies and makes sure your course choices match your goals and interests.
