Our Interaction Design Major

PNCA's Interaction Design major prepares you to shape how people experience the world, from apps and digital products to physical spaces, services, and technologies that don't quite exist yet. You'll learn through studio courses, creative coding, hands-on research, and sponsored projects to build your foundation, while a thesis gives you the space to pursue something that matters to you. Our program offers small cohorts, deep mentorship opportunities, and a foundation in ethical design.

By the time you graduate, you'll know how to take an idea from sketch to prototype, test it, and present a portfolio that opens doors in UI/UX, product design, interaction design, and creative technology.

Why choose Interaction Design at Pacific Northwest College of Art?

  • Embrace a creative tech environment. Study in a region where creative technology, UI/UX, product design, and independent media are part of the culture. Find a supportive Pacific Northwest community where collaboration, experimentation, and design work are part of everyday creative practice.
  • Build a strong portfolio and experience. Our program focuses on real-world learning through professional collaborations, exhibitions, and studio tours. Find mentorship through the Office of Career Design and small, focused classes.
  • Design for people first. Study coding, user interface design, AI, and emerging technologies while building accessible, user-friendly tools for diverse communities through usability testing and problem-solving.

FAQs

An Interaction Design (IxD) major teaches students to create meaningful experiences where people engage with digital and physical systems. You will design interfaces, test ideas, and build working prototypes.

IxD majors look broadly at the full experience someone has with a product, service, or system. Interaction design focuses on how people and systems communicate, including what users perceive and do as they move through an experience, and is shaped by UX/UI design principles and information architecture.

Absolutely. According to Deloitte, the creative economy employs 7% of the workforce and is projected to grow by 40% by 2030. By combining design skills with a technical foundation, you can pursue roles such as:

  • Creative Technologist
  • Design Strategist
  • Digital Product Designer
  • Graphic Designer
  • Motion Designer
  • Product Manager
  • Project Manager
  • UI Designer
  • UI Researcher
  • UX Architect
  • UX Designer
  • UX Researcher

Each year, more job postings require applicants to have skills related to AI, machine learning, and coding.

The Pacific Northwest is a great place to study user experience (UX) design, with strong support from IxD and UI design programs. Portland is home to a vibrant culture that highlights independent media, including comics, publishing, and analog gaming.

PNCA's Interaction Design degree program delivers the skills that those employers are looking for. Consider regional employers such as Nike, OHSU, OMSI, LAIKA, Wieden+Kennedy, Instrument, AKQA, ShadowMachine, Deep Sky, Autodesk, Adobe, IDEO, ESRI, Google, and Arup.

Consider building connections with organizations such as the Interaction Design Foundation Portland Chapter, Portland UX Design Club, AIGA Portland Chapter, Portland Design Thinkers, AI PDX, Portland Indie Game Squad (PIGSquad), ChickTech, and PDX Hackerspace.
