FAQs

2D animation is the process of creating movement using two-dimensional images, drawings, or digital artwork. Animators create the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of images over time, whether through traditional frame-by-frame drawing, digital animation software, or a combination of techniques. 2D animation is used across film, television, advertising, video games, motion graphics, and digital media. Animators combine artistic and technical skills to create engaging characters, environments, and visual stories.

The two animation styles have different approaches to how characters, objects, and environments are created. 2D animation is flat, using artwork that focuses on height and width, while 3D animation uses digital models that have height, width, and depth.

  • In 2D animation, artists typically create movement by drawing images frame by frame. This approach is commonly used for traditional cartoons, animated shorts, motion graphics, and stylized visual storytelling.
  • In 3D animation, artists build digital models and animate them within a three-dimensional space. This technique is often used in feature films, video games, visual effects, and immersive media.

Both forms of animation rely on the same core principles of movement, timing, storytelling, and character performance. Many animators study both approaches, but a 2D animation program typically places greater emphasis on drawing, design, and frame-by-frame animation techniques.

Learning 2D animation is an ongoing process, which means each student may develop at a different pace. Building stronger skills in drawing, movement, character animation, storytelling, and 2D animation software usually takes years of study and experience. Many choose a 2D animation school or program to gain the skills necessary for the art form.

A 2D animation minor will help you build skills through hands-on coursework, guided projects, and feedback from faculty and peers. As you develop your abilities, you'll gain experience with different techniques while building a portfolio of creative work.

Students in the 2D Animation minor have access to professional-grade tools, equipment, and production spaces, including:

  • Wacom Cintiq workstations equipped with animation software
  • Dedicated 2D animation workstations for traditional and digital workflows
  • Light tables for hand-drawn animation and frame-by-frame production

  • Canon 50D cameras for animation production
  • High-lumen projectors for installation and presentation
  • 4K cameras and Steadicams for hybrid media projects
