PORTLAND, OR – October 17, 2013 – Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) presents two related exhibitions in the Philip Feldman Gallery + Project Space each addressing commercial illustration and image-making through a different lens. Tear-Sheet: The daily grind of illustration examines the extensive process of contemporary newspaper and magazine illustrators. Crisis Image Archives is a selection of visual representations of “the crisis” appearing in the last 5 years of the 300 magazines and journals archived in Chicago’s Alternative Press Center. Both exhibitions open with a reception on First Thursday, November 7, 2013 6-8 pm. “The Daily Grind of Illustration” is a related program on November 4 at 6:30pm in Swigert Commons at PNCA. “The Daily Grind” is a conversation between Nicholas Blechman, illustrator and Art Director of The New York Times Book Review and Berlin-based author and illustrator Christoph Niemann about the ups, the downs, current trends and gossip in illustration today.
Tear-Sheet: The daily grind of illustration
The image and word have never had a more successful marriage then in the newspapers and magazines. They are expected to do together what each cannot on its own. These expectations are high and the timelines short. Even before the onslaught of the 24-hour news cycle, artists slinging the ink of the brush have had to contend with claustrophobic deadlines and enigmatic editors. Curated by Feldman Gallery + Project Space curator Mack McFarland and PNCA professor Kurt Hollomon, Tear-Sheet goes behind the scenes to shine a light on the process of the contemporary newspaper and magazine illustrators. The exhibition situates finished images in print alongside sketches with art director notes and coffee stains. Tear-Sheet includes work by artists including: Joe Ciardiello, Regan Dunnick, Vivienne Flesher, Marcellus Hall, John Hersey, Philippe Lardy, Catherine Lazure, Ross MacDonald, Jack A. Molloy, Bill Russell, and Ward Schumaker.
Crisis Image Archives
Crisis Image Archives is an ongoing research project curated by Daniel Tucker, that collects all of the visual representations of “the crisis” that have appeared in the last 5 years in the 300 magazines and journals archived in the Alternative Press Center in Chicago, IL. Totaling 750 images, these illustrations and photographs compose a record of the collective visual imagination of the international political and cultural left. Frequently used graphic tropes portraying bankers, fat cats, Keynes, Marx, Obama and protesters are found alongside more surprising depictions of agony, desperation, and holistic futures. This exhibition presents a selection of reproduction prints from the archive plus a series of interpretive texts.
About the Feldman Gallery + Project Space
PNCA’s Feldman Gallery + Project Space is the centerpiece of a total of eight galleries on the main PNCA campus and in satellite locations. Dedicated to bringing national and international contemporary artists to Portland, PNCA’s Feldman Gallery features six exhibitions of national/international artists annually and is free to the public seven days a week. The Feldman Gallery is also an educational resource for local schools and organizations; school groups visit the gallery throughout the year to view new exhibitions.
