The Center for Contemporary Art & Culture Presents Roy Tomlinson: ReMap

Portland, OR—August 1, 2016—The Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) presents Roy Tomlinson: ReMap, opening September 1, 2016 in PNCA’s New Commons and running through September 22.
This exhibition of new work is comprised of a large-scale installation and a new series of process-driven works on paper. The exhibition will feature a fabricated 12’ x16’ light-sealed room that will be illuminated only by the viewer with a self-activated flash. Tomlinson is interested in the possibility of disrupting the usual pathways of visual interpretation as a way to challenge the viewer’s conditioned reaction to perceived visual information. The work is inspired by Tomlinson’s interests in the nature of perception, physics, and Buddhist psychology.
“It’s splendid that we can host this ambitions project from one of our dedicated faculty,” says Mack McFarland, Director of the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture. “Roy's project expands his painting and drawing practice and is exemplary in demonstrating the ways artists explore new forms within their mediums and ideas.”
The exhibition will be open Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm.
This work is presented with the support of the McGeady Faculty Development Fund at Pacific Northwest College of Art. In its inaugural year the McGeady Faculty Development Fund awarded two $10,000 grants, to Tomlinson and to Laura Heit, for the production of new work.
Roy Tomlinson, a native of Seattle, is a painter and interdisciplinary artist. He was awarded the Eisner Prize from the University of California at Berkeley, and is the recipient of numerous grants including a Gottlieb Foundation Grant. His work has been exhibited in California at the Oakland Museum, Mills College Art Museum, Oakland Art Gallery, and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery among other venues. His solo exhibitions in San Francisco include Stephen Wirtz Gallery, Gallery 16, Miller/Brown Gallery, and SFMOMA Artist Gallery. Tomlinson has also exhibited his work throughout the Portland area including shows at Worksound International, Nisus Gallery, galleryHOMELAND, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. His work has been published in Eleven Eleven, ZYZZYVA, Inquiring Mind, and Micro Publishing News among other publications. Tomlinson lived in the Bay Area for many years and taught in the painting department at the California College of the Arts before joining the faculty at PNCA. He is now an Associate Professor and the Director of the Foundation Program.
