PNCA Presents Jesse Hayward’s ROUGH PATCH
An interactive installation in Swigert Commons

Portland, OR, June 16, 2014 — Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) presents a solo exhibition of a work by Jesse Hayward entitled ROUGH PATCH in PNCA’s Swigert Commons. The exhibition is set to open Friday, June 20 and run through Sunday, July 20 with a reception for the artist on First Thursday, July 3.

For ROUGH PATCH, Hayward presents viewers with two pedestals, one stacked with hundreds of painted pieces of canvas or “patches” and the other holding a bottomless jar of push-pins. The walls of the Commons itself will become an evolving work throughout the run of the exhibition as anyone who attends the show or visits the school will be invited to pin canvas patches up on the walls, move patches around, and take some down again. Direct audience participation will define the outcome of this work.

Whether it’s with painted toothpicks stabbed into amorphous armatures or with hundreds of painted boxes stacked and re-stacked, Jesse Hayward creates art installations that are intended for direct audience manipulation. Utilizing repetition and ritual, he builds and paints objects in his studio that are then reimagined through a collaborative installation practice, articulating a space in which boundaries are blurred. The sculptural commingles with the painterly, the co-active with the drawn. Forever in flux, the work unfolds as an artist/community collaboration, with multiple genres collapsing into one other. Rhythms of color and form soften and obscure their own structural underpinnings, foreshadowing the unpredictable nature of collaboration and the immateriality of potential outcomes.

Jesse Hayward received his MFA from California College of Art in 2002. His work has been exhibited at PDX Contemporary Art Window Project in Portland, OR, Southern Exposure and Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco, CA, and at The Affair at The Jupiter Art Fair. In 2006, Hayward’s work was included in the Oregon Biennial at the Portland Art Museum. More recently, Hayward was 2013 Summer Artist-in-Residence at Portland Community College and was named to the short-list for the Portland Art Museum’s Contemporary Northwest Art Award. His work has been reviewed in The Oregonian, PORT, PDX Magazine, Willamette Week, and the Portland Mercury as well as on radio by OPB and KBOO.

About Pacific Northwest College of Art
As Oregon’s flagship college of art and design since 1909, Pacific Northwest College of Art has helped shape Oregon’s visual arts landscape for more than a century. PNCA students study with award-winning faculty in small classes. In the last seven years, PNCA has doubled both the student body and full-time faculty, quadrupled its endowment, and added innovative undergraduate and graduate programs. PNCA is now embarking on its boldest venture yet by establishing the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design as an anchor for the College’s vision of a new campus home on Portland’s North Park Blocks. Focusing on the transformative power of creativity, the capital campaign, Creativity Works Here, was launched in June 2012 with a lead gift from The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation of $5 million. PNCA’s new home will be a bustling hub for creativity and entrepreneurship, reflecting the influential role of art and design in our 21st century economy – both in Portland and beyond.
