Time In-Between: Temporal Matter(s) -- 2022 PNCA MFA First Year Exhibition

Each Spring the MFA First Year Exhibition is an opportunity for candidates across the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies to showcase their artistic development as they all near the conclusion of their first year of graduate school. All of these artists, designers, craftspeople, activists, community builders, writers and more most certainly find themselves in a “time in-between”, not only a reference to occupying a time of transition and revelation with their studies as they prepare to stride into their final year, but concomitantly inhabiting a space beyond the school environment that is ever-shifting, temporal, and pervasively revelatory.
Time In-Between: Temporal Matter(s) is an exemplification of the desire to recreate understanding – understanding of grief, memory, knowledges, vulnerability, sacredness, futurity, and defining one’s self. My own grad school mentor described graduate school as being a time where “every cell in her body was replaced”, recreating her anew which I have since adopted this metaphor for myself. I see this phenomenon in-action throughout the works of all of these students. Present in this show is pensive self-reflection and a genuine exposition of sensitive experimentation, articulating the joys and sorrows of being and wrestling with “temporal matters”.
It is my distinct pleasure to welcome all to view this exhibition after two years of complications impeding access and the ability to celebrate the labor and love of the first year students. The 2022 MFA First Year Exhibition serves as a purposeful reminder to revel in the in-between times, honor and acknowledge the temporary, and cherish what matters mean the most to each of us.
